this is an accident involving an overturned car. chp is out there now. we are told a minimal delay with this accident so far. of course, it is still early but we are sending a photographer to the scene so we'll bring you some live pictures in just a moment. meantime, let's get a check of your forecast. here's lawrence. >> elizabeth, high pressure building in again temperatures expected to soar. 90s, triple digits again inland but a major cooldown is in the works. more on that coming up in a couple of minutes. back to you. >> thank you. 5:00. a boat full of men from the bay area out on a deep sea fishing expedition. this morning, the mexican navy is still looking for several men still missing after that boat capsized early in the morning. 4 people were on board the 115- foot charter. 27 were passengers, 16 crewmembers, 43 people on board. most of the passengers from northern california, one confirmed dead, seven missing. the boat sank early sunday morning in the sea of cortez

south of the mexican town of san felipe. kristy seifkin is in our newsroom keeping track of the ongoing search for the missing. reporter: good morning. the gentlemen who boarded this boat over a week and thought they would have a fun 4th of july fishing trip and there was a quick change in plans when the huge storm hit unexpectedly. conditions were clear when they left and two waves hit the boat capsizing it. that was 2:30 in the morning. the men got off the boat quickly. most of the men were asleep at the time. they had to leave their belongings behind. some of the men were able to make their way to the secluded islands while others floated in their life vests in the water or hung onto ice chests in the water. the coast guard and mexican navy searched for the survivors for more than 36 hours. >> there's a lot of different factors that go into survivability. the age of the person, male or female, whether or not they have life jackets on. >> reporter: the survivors are

in good condition but some are sunburned and very dehydrated after spending 15-plus hours in the water before the rescue. one of the survivors is rich [ indiscernible ] from novato. he joined the fishing trip as a last-minute addition and called his wife to let her know that he was safe. >> then he mentioned that they got awakened at about 2:30 and they all just had to jump off the boat and take what -- life jackets on and he indicated they had been in the water for about 15 hours. >> reporter: michael ng of belmont is another bay area survivor who was on the trip and he was one of those men who clung to an ice chest and floated around until he was rescued. and lee ikogami flipped right into the water when the boat capsized and survived. the mexican government considered making this a recovery mission but after speaking to american officials they turned it back into a

rescue mission because some are believed to be alisma locksmith is going to baja to help those who lost their belongings in the water, car keys, cell phones, identification, so they can get back to the bay area. back to you. >> thank you. three brothers who survived say they aren't leaving until they find their fourth brother. the wife of 55-year-old brian wong of berkeley says he is still missing. he and his brothers, gary, glen and craig have taken an annual fishing trip to baja for years. among the missing, 62-year-old mark dorland of tuolumne county. his fiance says he was one of the first to fall into the water. he had no life vest on. and the man who organized the fishing trip bob higgins is listed as a survivor. charlie gibson a police chief of contra costa community college district says he was sleeping until the alarm sounded and the boat sank. he spent 16 hours in the water before he was finally rescued.

you can continue to watch our coverage of the search for the missing boaters. all you have to do is go to our website, cbssf.com. contra costa county firefighters are keeping a watch for hot spots in the east bay this morning. overnight, several grassfires broke out within a mile of each other. the biggest fire was in bay point. check out that smoke burning several acres of federal land near port chicago highway. now, kids were seen running from the area but it's not clear if they started the fire. fire investigators are trying to determine if illegal fireworks were the cause. >> there are a lot of fireworks out. our fire marshals are out trying to determine what the cause of the fires are. but obviously that's one of the reasons that we try and -- we don't have sane and safe fireworks in the county. they are illegal. and that's one of the reasons, to make sure we don't have fires. >> the contra costa fire department is getting help from other agencies including cal fire and the east bay regional

fire district. plenty of fireworks around the bay area last night both legal and illegal. in fact, these are the illegal kind. you're looking at them over east oakland. they were a lot more elaborate than the sparklers. they provided a real light show and on the ground, a lot of noise. the chief of bart police says it appears sunday night's fatal shooting by one of its officers was justified. two officers arrived at the san francisco civic center platform on a train shortly after there was a call about a man armed with a knife and a broken bottle. within a minute of confronting that man, sunday night, one of the officers shot him. investigators are still not saying what led up to the shooting. one of the officers was cut on the arm. a restaurant in san mateo is holding a fundraiser today to increase the reward in an unsolved murder. douglas costello was a night manager at tgi fridays when he was killed in january of 2008. today would have been his 40th

birthday and for the day, the restaurant is donating a quarter of its proceeds toward a reward for any information. currently stands at $40,000. 5:06. let's get an update on the accident blocking traffic on highway 101 in san mateo. elizabeth? >> okay, thanks. traffic alert still in effect. they still have three left lanes block. we are talking about san mateo southbound 101 just past 92 exit. this is an accident involving an overturned car. chp is out there so we are waiting for them to give us word when they are going to clear this accident but so far no estimated time when they are going to be able to open any lanes. just minimal slowing approaching the scene so no need to use 280 as an alternate. just a small bottleneck right there where chp has the lanes blocked. in the meantime word of a new accident now actually a couple of accidents towards the bay bridge. tony with the kcbs phone force letting us know about an

accident around the "s" curve but it's already cleared to the right shoulder. there was another accident just past the metering lights. that one is also out of lanes as well so right now traffic looking okay heading into san francisco. but you will find possibly some slowing just some looky-loo slowing approaching two separate fender-benders heading on the upper deck into the city. more traffic in a bit. in the meantime, back to you. >> all right. elizabeth, yeah, we have some changes in the weather. today we are going to see hot temperatures again even hotter than yesterday in some spots inland maybe some triple digits but some patchy dense fog has moved along the coastline and that's very thick. watch out for that this morning. temperatures in the 50s at the beaches, mild inland plenty of 60s here by the afternoon. moving well into the 90s in the valleys even some triple digits well inland. 98 in livermore, 96 concord, 64 much cooler in pacifica and about 73 degrees in san francisco. cooler temperatures en route toward the bay area, some part his cloudy skies for tomorrow. and then as we head in toward

the welcome back. we have a traffic alert in san mateo. southbound 10 -- southbound 101, three lanes blocked. we'll have details on that and fender-benders on the bridge. back to you. >> thank you. the jury in the casey anthony murder trial will continue their deliberations this morning. 25-year-old florida woman accused of killing her 2-year- old daughter back in 2008. the jury began deliberating yesterday but they did not reach a verdict. they have most of the evidence in the jury room but they can return to the courtroom to see video evidence. more trouble for the former chief of the international monetary fund. an attorney says a french novelist will file a criminal

complaint today against dominique strauss-kahn accusing him of attempted rape back in 2002. the writer came forward with the allegations after new york police arrested strauss-kahn on accusations he assaulted a hotel maid. former immigrant chief is imf is out on bail. the fight over raising the nation's debt limit starts again today on capitol hill and what a fight it is. the u.s. senate is cutting its holiday recess short and the house returns to work tomorrow but it's not clear how much progress they will make. republicans and democrats are at odds over how to raise the debt limit and whether or not they should. the biggest sticking point is taxes. the gop wants tax hikes off the table. >> the last thing that employers need is further disincentives to not hire people. and that's what higher taxes would mean. >> democrats want to end tax breaks for oil companies and

morning. most of them are from northern california. one person is confirmed dead. firefighters have been contending with several grassfires in east contra costa county. the largest burned several acres of grassland in bay point near port chicago highway. and exxonmobil now admits the yellowstone river clean-up is going to be a bigger job than expected. 42,000 gallons of oil leaked from a 12" pipeline under the river starting friday night. good morning. just getting up on this 5th of july, we are looking at mostly clear skies inland and mild temperatures out there now. some of the numbers up into the 60s already. at the coast, we have some very dense fog so watch out for that out toward the beaches. a sign of some big changes in the not too distant future. today, hey, we're going to see those numbers soar again, 90s and low 100s inland but at the coast, 30 to 40-degree difference there as we are going to see that patchy fog right out toward the beaches. of course the bay just falling

in between there mostly sunny skies, a little breezy in the afternoon. numbers right now we have 62 degrees in san jose. very mild start there. 61 in fremont but 52 degrees in san francisco. and 53 degrees in pacifica. we are looking at hot temperatures in the central valley as high as 103 in sacramento today, 104 in fresno. the high country checking in at 92 degrees, yosemite. and 84 degrees in lake tahoe. high pressure still the dominant feature right now strengthening somewhat for today so i think it's going to be hotter in most spots inland for today. at the coast you have that patchy fog that will keep you cooler but you get the idea, looks like another hot one in the works. temperatures inside the bay you have some 80s and 90s, 60s at the coast. hot 101 in brentwood today, 98 livermore, 78 degrees in oakland. north bay looking at temperatures up into the 80s and 90s in many spots although cooler as you approach the coastline. much cooler temperatures toward the latter part of the week. tomorrow though a little subtropical moisture coming our way but as we look toward next

weekend much cooler temperatures, more low clouds and fog on the way. all right. time for a traffic check with elizabeth. we'll continue to keep you updated on this traffic alert still in effect along the peninsula in san mateo southbound 101 just past highway 92. chp still has three lanes blocked. this is an overturn crash. we have a photographer who just arrived on scene, and chp told him that they should be re- opening lanes here in the next 10 minutes or so. in the meantime, we have only seen minimal delays because of this accident. so just not that many cars on the road at this time of the morning which is good news so no need to use an alternate at this time. again if they re-open lanes here shortly. bay bridge so far, so good. earlier fender-benders, one past the metering lights, another approaching the "s" curve. for a while they were blocking lanes but now all those accidents have been cleared so no delay heading into san francisco. thank you to the members of the kcbs phone force for continuing to keep us updated on those earlier accidents. 880 the nimitz through oakland,

this looks great in either direction northbound and southbound 880 as you pass the coliseum. easier to see those headlights but everything is a pretty nice ride hayward southbound. looking good as well if you are commuting across the golden gate bridge traffic wise but again fog an issue. lawrence has been talking about this, as well. low visibility right now across the span but no official fog advisory issued by the chp. antioch bridge looks good. coming off the bridge, highway 4 looks okay right now past a street to somersville and actually still looks like a nice ride towards 2 had 2 and concord. again remember kcbs, our radio partners, at 740-am and 106.9- fm. back to you. >> thank you. the men who died in multiple shootings sunday night have now been identified. the shootings began around sundown. a man was shot at ohio and 30th

streets. he survived but two hours later in an unincorporated area of north richmond 28-year-old ray hudson, jr., was gunned down on west ruby avenue. >> i know one thing though about my cousin. he wasn't harming nobody. he was trying to be a good father. >> two other shootings followed in rapid success. 19-year-old rashon bailey on center avenue and then darrell duncan was killed on mcdonald avenue and first street. still no official word as to what caused a two-alarm house fire in pleasant hill yesterday. investigators believe it started in a shed then spread to two neighboring homes. one of the homeowners tells cbs 5 she believes the fire was the result of a domestic dispute involving a former relative. a surprising new study about autism. the pregnancy factors that could put kids at risk. >> plus, will maria shriver tell all about her split with

this is the video from the capital 4th in washington, the annual event attracting hundreds of thousands to the west lawn of the capital. the crew for the final space mission has arrived in florida. four astronauts flew themselves from houston to the kennedy space center yesterday. the launch countdown begins today. liftoff is set for friday morning. as many as one million people might be on hand to watch. the launch director welcomed the crew with american flags. japan's catastrophic earthquake and tsunami could create an environmental headache for us here in california. scientists say millions of tons of debris that washed into the water is headed toward the west code coast. it's estimated it's traveling at 10 miles a day and spread over an area about the size of california. the environment may be a factor in autism. in the past, experts have blamed most of the risk for autism for inherited genes but a new stanford study found a

higher-than-expected rate of autism in fraternal twins shifting the focus to the mother's womb. the study found factors could include stress, diet, infections and the mother's age and health when she gets pregnant. well, maria shriver could get a record-breaking book advance. >> it depends on whether she decides to write a memoir on her marriage to arnold schwarzenegger. she is a great author, by the way. she filed for divorce last fright two months after he admitted he fathered a child with their housekeeper. now there are reports that shriver is being offered a very lucrative book deal possibly even more than $15 million. that is what bill clinton earned for his memoirs. so hers could be record- breaking. >> what do you think? she is a kennedy. she may not want to tell all. >> she has already written several books including one at the start of her career. it was brilliant. i wouldn't be surprised if she shared it. >> she's a journalist, too. we'll be right back. helping you watch your

bay area families waiting for news about their loved ones involved in a deadly boating accident. still a rescue mission thanks to warm weather and calm waters. warm water, as well. the boat sank in the sea of cortez south of san felipe of mexico's baja, california peninsula. 43 people were on board the 115- foot charter. 27 were passengers, 16 crewmembers. most of the passengers were from northern california. now, one of them is confirmed dead, 7 others are still missing. kristy seifkin is live in the newsroom keeping track of the ongoing search for the missing. kristy. reporter: good morning. the gentlemen left on a beautiful calm day similar to what the conditions are now. they didn't think by any means that the storm would hit. but it did unexpectedly and two large waves came crashing down onthe to the boat sunday in the middle of the night around 2 :30 a.m. many of those men were asleep at the time had to leave their belongings on the boat jump in the water. some were tossed into the water. some were able to get to a

secluded island, others floated on ice chests. they were searched for, for more than 36 hours. >> they conducted their search until they were the first crew reached their limit. the second crew was flown out there via a coast guard c-130 to meet them and then they got if the same helicopter and the new crew took that helicopter down and conducted their search. >> reporter: the survivors are reported to be in good condition but certainly some are sunburned, others dehydrated from spending 15- plus hours in the water before they were rescued. two people from tuolumne county were on board. one was been found, the other, mark dorland, is still missing. >> i'm going with my gut instinct. i think he is somewhere. and i don't think that he's doing well. i don't think that he's passed. >> that was mark's fiancee speaking. the mexican government had

originally made this a recovery mission but then after speaking to u.s. official decided to turn it back into a rescue mission because they believe some of those missing individuals are still alive. since that ship is 200 feet under water, the rescuers have been enlisted the help of u.s. divers to go under water and continue with that search. today for the passengers have been rescued a locksmith is on the way to help them get into their cars since everything was lost off the boat, car keys, cell phones, identification. the search continues. >> there has to be hope was the weather is nice and the water is probably in the 70s, i would imagine. so i'm sure they could survive a couple of days and islands down there, as well. >> reporter: absolutely. the conditions today are much more conducive to a search, the warm weather. so hopefully search crews will be able to get in there and do the work they couldn't do during the storm. >> thank you, kristy seifkin

after late-night reveling. it's looking like patchy fog at the beaches. watch out for dense fog at the coast. but inland valleys mostly clear and that's where it is going to get hot once again. these temperatures up into the 50s and the 60s already inland. cooler of course at the coast with the patchy fog. by the afternoon, hotter than it was yesterday. 90s maybe even low 100s in the interior valleys. 70s in oakland, 90s toward san jose, while out toward the coastline a big change in the temperatures. those temperatures mainly into the 60s. much cooler weather for everyone coming up. we'll have more on that in a few minutes. right now let's check traffic with elizabeth. >> we'll go right out to san mateo. we have video of an earlier accident along the peninsula. southbound 101 just past the highway 92 exit in san mateo. you can see for a while they had three left lanes shut down. chp was out there with their flares. traffic never really got backed up just minor slowing approaching the scene but within the last 10 minutes they

have completely cleared the scene. in fact, we can go to our maps to show you our live traffic sensors in the area. everything is cheer, good to go -- clear, good to go in both directions of 101 so no longer a problem along the peninsula. bay bridge toll plaza looks great. nice and light all the way into san francisco. had a couple of earlier fender- benders here as well but all lanes once again re-opened heading into san francisco just in time to get back to work. back to you. >> thank you. at this hour, jury deliberations are scheduled to pick up once again in the murder trial of casey anthony. the 25-year-old florida woman accused of killing her 2-year- old daughter in 2008. the jury began deliberating yesterday for six hours but didn't reach a verdict on the 4th of july. they are weighing weather anthony is guilty of first degree premeditated murder which could carry the death penalty. >> the whole point of being on a jury is to make these judgments, to have the common sense, to look at the evidence

going to be cool. we are going to watch those temperatures on the mild side right now. many 60s showing up in the valleys, nice and clear there. that patchy fog at the coast, it is dense on the surface so if you are traveling there be careful today. sunny and hot by the afternoon, 101 inland, 40 degrees cooler at the coast with patchy fog. so big difference to start out the day and bigger in the afternoon. 50s at the coast, 60s in some of the valleys right now. inland you will see triple digits, 104 in fresno, 103 in sacramento, 92 yosemite while 68 degrees partly cloudy skies into the monterey bay. high pressure looking to strengthen for today meaning temperatures are going to come up a few degrees but probably this is the last gasp of the heat wave as it looks like temperatures will cool down. warmer around the bay area except at the coast. temperatures like this inside the bay, 80s and 90s toward the

santa clara valley. 60s at the immediate coastline. the east bay temperatures again scorching in toward the afternoon in brentwood about 101 degrees there. 98 in livermore. 98 degrees in antioch and 96 degrees in concord. as you look toward the for the bay we'll cool those temperatures off coastside mainly into the 60s but heat things up in a hurry towards santa rosa maybe as high as 92. cooling down over the next couple of days, even a little subtropical moisture coming in. next weekend low clouds and fog really going to ramp up dropping those temperatures well below average. let's check traffic with elizabeth. >> thank you. we'll go outside live to san jose. and we continue to see traffic moving across just fine those northbound lanes of 101. headlights are heading towards santa clara. southbound traffic looks good, as well. check us out on twitter at cbs 5 traffic.

from the south bay we'll check for the bay. fog is an issue in our golden gate bridge camera. it's positioned there before you reach the toll plaza so southbound 101 traffic heading into the city looks okay for right now but definitely watch out for low visibility across the deck. you can see a drive time here 8 minutes now on southbound 101 in san rafael. a big story there. 880 through oakland, live traffic sensors one updating but overall top speeds on the nimitz. as take on seattle at 7:05 tonight so possibly expect some extra traffic later on this evening. san mateo bridge commuters this looks great no issues at all. westbound 92, 13 minutes from hayward towards foster city and the peninsula. and mass transit continues to move along just fine no matter what kind of mass transit you're riding. bart has 42 trains all reporting no delay. ace train number one a great

limit. the u.s. senate is cutting its holiday recess short and the house returns to work tomorrow. who knows how much progress them make. republicans and democrats are at odds over how to raise the debt limit and whether or not they should. the biggest sticking point is taxes. the gop wants tax hikes off the table. >> the last thing that employers need is further disincentives to not hire people. and that's what higher taxes would mean. >> democrats want to end tax breaks for oil companies and for corporations that send jobs overseas and want to get rid of subsidies for corporate jet owners. congress has four weeks before the treasury department says the government will default on its bills. bad news for workers at lockheed martin. the company is planning to cut 1500 jobs. the layoffs will be at its airplane-making facilities. just two weeks ago they announced 1200 job cuts in the

space division. these layoffs come as congress looks to limit defense spending. lockheed says the new job cuts are because of what it calls the changing business environment. government regulators are reportedly looking at twitter to see if the company is trying to limit its competition. twitter hires outside companies to build 9 a.m. occasions for its messaging platt -- to build the applications for its messaging platform. the ftc is looking into claims that the company is trying to buy or block the competition. now appearing on twitter! this man, vice president joe biden. his handle is @vp and already has more than 6500 followers. he isn't following anyone yet not even president obama. biden's first tweet a 4th of july message from himself and wife jill asking americans to take a little time to think about the u.s. troops. >> i think that's unbelievable. he is not following anybody, even the boss.
